Coastal Grandma

Grandma’s Beach House

The residents of this home wanted a sanctuary away from the city, where nothing could distract them from the waterfront view. We focused on a neutral palette so as not to compete with the natural beauty of the surroundings, taking color inspiration from the sand and the sunset. We brought in pattern, texture, and shapes reminiscent of a calm day at the beach: organic stripes similar to a seashell or the sand at low tide, the curve of the sun setting on the horizon, and natural wood grains.

The biggest challenge of this project was that the owners bought the home during the height of the pandemic, so I designed it all before ever seeing it in person, and was limited to shopping entirely online. On top of that, the couple was adamant that the space needed to be comfortable for the two of them and their two dogs, and also flex to accommodate their whole family when their three children and growing number of grandchildren visited. So we focused on an expandable dining table and limited our couch selections to sleeper sofas, so there’s always room for one more.
